Workplace giving is contributing to company culture

Donating to charity through payroll giving has gained traction in corporate Australia as a way to enhance workplace culture. CEOs from leading organisations understand the positive benefits workplace giving has on staff, society and their bottom line.

As reported on 01 January by Damon Kitney in The Australian, Catherine Tanna, CEO of EnergyAustralia led the charge to implement a successful program for her people after hearing a transformational speech by JB Hi-Fi Group CEO, Richard Murray at a Business Council of Australia meeting.

“People work in energy because they believe it makes a difference to people’s lives. Energy is important. Workplace giving is one way of understanding what matters to people. I think it creates extra connection between our people and the business.”

“We want our people to have the opportunity to do things that make them proud.”

“For a long time, JB didn’t talk about its workplace giving program externally. We have only talked about it to encourage other corporates to embrace this,” Murray says. “Yes, it is great to receive some external accolades, but the internal thing has been about all the people. It is part of who we are. In essence, the true test of your culture is, does it resonate with the team and who you are?”

ANZ Chief Executive Shayne Elliott identified that workplace giving aligns with the company’s core purpose.  During 2019, ANZ tripled the impact of its program by double matching staff pre-tax donations.

“I’ve promoted our program because I want ANZ to help our people donate to the charities they care about most,” he says.
